What happens at a mammogram exam? During the exam, the breast is compressed for a few seconds, to spread the tissues apart and include as much of the breast in the scan as possible. An average of 2 views of each breast is obtained.Screening mammography is the gold standard for the early diagnosis of non-palpable breast cancer. Most women will have a normal exam, and be returned for an annual follow-up.
