SMMC Names Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Jeff Davis 

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – St. Mary’s Medical Center CEO Davide M. Carbone today announced that Tequesta resident W. Jeffrey (Jeff) Davis, D.O., F.A.C.E.P. has been named the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO), effective December 10.

As CMO, Dr. Davis will be responsible for patient case management and utilization review and the oversight and promotion of high quality patient care.  He will also assist with promoting medical staff relations, physician recruitment and retention, medical staff education, advising in bio-ethical issues and monitoring our compliance with the Ethical and Religious Directives of the Catholic Church, ensuring clinical compliance, coordinating academic affiliation and residency/training programs and overseeing external medical affiliations while assisting the CEO in managing the day-to-day medical staff support and operations at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He will report directly to Carbone and will work closely with other members of the hospital’s leadership team.

Dr. Davis is board certified in emergency medicine and utilization review and most recently served as Trauma Agency Director for the Palm Beach County Health Care District and Medical Director of EMS, Department of Public Safety in the Town of Palm Springs, Fla.

“Dr. Davis’ education, extensive emergency medical experience and reputation for being a skilled health management administrator will serve our hospital well,” Carbone said.  “He is a great choice for Chief Medical Officer and an excellent addition to the St. Mary’s Medical Center leadership team.” 

Prior to his work for the Palm Beach County Health Care District, Dr. Davis served as staff emergency physician at various Florida hospitals and was medical director of Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue from 1984-2000; medical director of Palm Beach Community College’s Paramedic Program from 1987-1999; and medical director of Healthy Palm Beaches HMO, Delray Beach Fire Department, Boynton Beach Fire Department, Air Ambulance Network, and Trail Park Fire-Rescue District.  He received the Florida Medical Association’s Roy M. Baker, M.D. Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Emergency Medical Services” in 1996 and again in 2003 for his work in the field of emergency care.

  Dr. Davis provided the medical expertise for the design and implementation of the Palm Beach County Trauma System, labeled “one of the finest” in the nation by the American College of Surgeons.  He also established the Trauma Foundation of the Palm Beaches and developed the prototype for provision of acute care medical services in hurricane/disaster plans for the Palm Beach County Medical Society, which were adopted by the Florida Medical Association, among many noteworthy accomplishments.  

Dr. Davis received his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida in Tampa, and his Doctor of Osteopathy from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in Missouri.  He completed an internship at Jacksonville General Hospital and his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine Jacksonville.  Dr. Davis is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and a member of the Florida College of Emergency Physicians, Palm Beach County Medical Society, Florida Association of EMS Medical Directors, Florida Medical Association and National Association of EMS Physicians.  He is active as a volunteer instructor and course director for the American Heart Association.
