General Neurology

Neurology is a medical specialty dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Specifically, it deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of disease involving the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems, including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle. A neurologist is a physician (not a surgeon) who specializes in neurology, and is trained to investigate, or diagnose and treat, neurological disorders.

What is a Neurologist?

A neurologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing nervous system disorders. Neurologists deal with medical problems that occur in the two parts of the nervous system: the central nervous system (which includes the brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (which includes the nerves, nerve roots, and muscles). They often perform tests and special examinations on various parts of your nervous system in order to properly diagnose and treat illness.

What conditions does a Neurologist treat?

Neurologists treat disorders of the nervous system, brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.

Common neurological disorders include:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gherig’s Disease)
  • Brain Injuries or Brain Tumors
  • Facial Pain
  • Headaches and Migranes
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Neuromuscular Disorders
  • Pain
  • Parkinson's Disease / Movement Disorders
  • Peripheral Nerve Disorders
  • Seizures / Epilepsy
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Tremors

What is the role of the Neurologist?

Neurologists are principal care providers or consultants to other physicians. When a patient has a neurological disorder that requires frequent care, a neurologist is often the principal care provider. Patients with disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease or multiple sclerosis may use a neurologist as their principal care physician.

In a consulting role, a neurologist will diagnose and treat a neurological disorder and then advise the primary care physician managing the patient's overall health. For example a neurologist would act in a consulting role for conditions such as stroke, concussion or headache.

Neurologist can recommend surgical treatment, but do not perform surgery. When treatment includes surgery, neurologists will monitor surgically-treated patients and supervise their continuing treatment. Neurosurgeons are medical doctors who specialize in performing surgical treatments of the brain or nervous system.
