Ali R. Malek M.D., Interventional Neurologist; Section Chief of Neurology, Medical Director of the Neurointerventional Program, Medical Director of the Stroke Program

Triple Boarded in Neurology, Vascular Neurology and Neurocritical Care, Dr. Malek comes to St. Mary’s Medical Center from the University of South Florida and Tampa General Hospital where he served as faculty in the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery and as the Director of their Neurosciences ICU for five years. He completed his Neurology Residency at the University of South Florida and was Chief Resident in his final year.  He has completed fellowships in Vascular and Critical Care Neurology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham under Dr. Camilo Gomez and in Endovascular Neurosurgery under Dr. Richard Fessler at Providence Hospital in Michigan. 

Dr. Malek has been involved in numerous professional & community organizations throughout his career, including being on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association for four years & was VP of the AHA Florida/Puerto Rico 2005-2006. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Florida Society of Neurology and LifeLink of Florida.

Services Dr. Malek provides includes but not limited to:

  • Acute Stroke Interventions including Intraarterial thrombolysis, Thrombectomy with the MERCI and Penumbra systems
  • Angioplasty and stenting of intra and extracranial cerebral vessels for the prevention and treatment of stroke including carotid stenting with distal protection
  • Coil embolization of cerebral aneurysms - both elective and ruptured
  • Embolization of AVMs, AVFs and other cerebrovascular abnormalities
  • Diagnostic Cerebral and Spinal angiography
  • Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty for the treatment of compression fractures
