Every patient’s case is different. Research indicates that personalized care may help promote better outcomes for cancer patients. That’s why The Kaplan Cancer Center not only provides comprehensive radiation therapy services, but does so in a friendly environment that stresses personalized care.
The level of care, along with the treatments, makes a difference to our cancer patients.
What is radiation therapy?
Radiation Therapy is the use of high energy x-rays, called ionizing radiation, to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. It works by damaging the DNA within cancer cells and destroying their ability to reproduce. Radiation therapy is usually combined with other treatments, like surgery and chemotherapy- and sometimes it is the only treatment a patient needs.
The Kaplan Cancer Center is staffed with highly trained professionals that work together as a team to develop your individual plan of care. Being part of a major medical center allows The Kaplan Cancer Center to provide multi-disciplinary services that many free-standing sites cannot provide.
The Medical Director of the Kaplan Cancer Center is Dr. Silvio A. Garcia, MD, FACRO. Dr. Garcia is a Fellow of the American College of Radiation Oncology and has been practicing in this discipline since 1987; he is experienced in 3-D Conformal External Radiation Therapy (XRT), Intense Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR), Mammosite 5 day breast cancer treatment and CyberKnife. In addition, Dr. Garcia is a clinical investigator for the National Institute of Health.
