Neurosurgery

Dr. David Petruska, Neurosurgeon

Neurosurgery is the surgery of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves and the supporting structures, the skull and spinal column.

Neurosurgeons undergo a rigorous training program, known as a residency, consisting of 5-6 years of postgraduate study in neurosurgery, following a mandatory 1-yr surgery internship. After completing this residency training, some neurosurgeons undertake advanced subspecialty training in programs known as fellowships which are typically 1-2 years in duration. Because of this demanding training process Neurosurgery is often viewed as one of the most prestigious fields in medicine.
