Mammography Services and Breast Health
Annual mammograms, monthly breast self-exams and regular clinical breast exams are key to detecting breast cancer early. Detecting cancer at an early stage increases an individual's chances for recovery and survival. Your mammogram may be the most important picture you ever take. You can read the American Cancer Society's Guidelines for early detection of breast cancer by clicking here.
What Happens at a Mammogram Exam?
During the exam, the breast is compressed for a few seconds, to spread the tissues apart and include as much of the breast in the scan as possible. An average of 2 views of each breast is obtained. Screening mammography is the gold standard for the early diagnosis of non-palpable breast cancer. Most women will have a normal exam, and will return for an annual follow-up.
