Hospital Earns National Certification in Spine Surgery

May 2, 2016

West Palm Beach, Fla. (May 2, 2016) – St. Mary’s Medical Center and the Palm Beach Children’s Hospital are proud to be the first in Palm Beach County to receive Joint Commission certification for their Spine Surgery Program. Covering a two-year period, the certification demonstrates compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care.

St. Mary’s underwent a rigorous on-site review where a Joint Commission expert evaluated the hospital for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management. St. Mary’s did not receive any recommendations for improvement.

“We are proud of our award-winning spine surgery team. We are now the first and only hospital in Palm Beach County to receive this distinguished accreditation,” said Gabrielle Finley-Hazle, CEO of St. Mary’s Medical Center and the Palm Beach Children’s Hospital. “This recognition is a testament to our continued focus on providing expert and top quality care for the patients we have the privilege to serve.”

The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification Program, launched in 2002, is designed to evaluate clinical programs across the continuum of care. Certification requirements address three core areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

For individuals suffering from joint, back or sports-related pain, the orthopedics program at St. Mary’s Medical Center and the Palm Beach Children’s Hospital provides minimally invasive solutions, such as physical therapy and medication. For those in need of surgery, the program offers some of the most advanced procedures, designed to reduce scarring and shorten recovery times. For more information, please visit
